Corning Tiger Program

Welcome to today’s 5^th & 6^th Grade Tryout for the Corning Tigers Basketball Program. Through this letter, we would like to provide you with as much information as we can. If you ever have any questions throughout the season, please feel free to contact one of us.

The Corning Tigers Basketball Program is a Corning-Painted Post area exclusively based team with interest in skill development and game experience for our local players in grades 5 and 6.

NOTE: We are asking that your son prioritize this basketball team over any other basketball teams or programs in the event of a conflict. It is unfair for a player to commit to this program then choose to play in another program when game/practice conflicts arise. This is a select group of players. Those players that are not chosen today might have been able to make this full commitment that we are asking. Your son’s commitment to this basketball program, if chosen, is appreciated.

TRAVEL: All of our games in both grade groups will involve local travel only. This means that we travel for games in an area from Bath to Owego to Watkins Glen to Jasper/Troupsburg. We have every intention of notifying you as soon as possible our game schedule as it develops. Games are generally on weekends but might occur, occasionally, during the week. We hope to schedule 20-25 games for the 5^th & 6^th grade teams.

PRACTICES:  The coaches will notify you of the site, days and times.

PLAYING TIME:  It is each coach’s intent to play every player on his roster for every game. In some cases, there will be players who will play more than others will. For the most part, however, playing time will be as equal as possible. Encourage your son to work hard in practice to improve his skills and earn additional playing time.

FEES: At the present time there is no fee to participate. We may, however once the team is chosen, request a small dollar amount to cover insurance costs, tournament entry fees and transportation costs (Gas). We will notify you of that amount, if your son is chosen, as soon as possible.

6^th grade – Tom Grimaldi & Bob Cevette

Bill Hopkins, Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at East High School and Mike Johnston, Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at West High School both are overseeing the program and will offer developmental skills to the players at each grade level.

FINAL ROSTER: A decision for determining the final roster for the 5^th & 6^th Grade Teams will be made this evening. The teams will consist of no more than 12 players. Criteria for selection include dribble skills with either hand, shooting skills, rebounding skills, passing skills, defensive skills and playing experience. Consideration is given for boys with size and with outstanding athleticism.  

Your son will receive a phone call, if he has made the team, from a member of the Corning Tiger Coaching Staff by tomorrow night notifying him about his selection and his first practice site.
